In Focus: November 2023

Susan White — “San Xavier del Bac”

This e-newsletter contains OPCC events, reminders, and news and will be published on the first Sunday of each month. Please send contributions to the newsletter to  opcc4news@gmail.com.   Contributions are due at noon on the Friday before publication, but if time permits, we will attempt to accommodate late contributions.

The operation of The Olympic Peaks Camera Club is totally reliant upon volunteers. Due to recent resignations, many of our current volunteers are performing multiple duties and are overworked. In order for us to continue to provide the services and events you have come to expect, WE NEED YOUR HELP.  Any sort of assistance is most welcome.

Our most pressing current need is finding people to help with field trips. To help support field trips and planning, we need more volunteers and a permanent Field Trip Chair. Please consider helping us. To find out our other current needs and to volunteer to help, check out the Volunteer Page on our website by clicking HERE.

The submission deadline for images is November 20, 2023, which is just around the corner.  Each participant may submit up to two images.  Remember this is an open competition - (almost) anything goes.  The primary requirement is that the photo must have been taken during this last year.  Images will be placed in a gallery for viewing, and members will select their 3 favorite photos.

The gallery for viewing the photos entered will be available on the website on November 21.  ALL entries will be anonymous.  Members will be able to pick their 3 favorite WOW photos and enter their votes between November 21 and November 27.  Winners will be announced at the Year-End Meeting and Holiday Party (see below) on December 7.

2023-2024 PSA Interclub Images and Scoresheets

From Peggy McClure:

We are competing in three divisions this year - Color, Monochrome, and Nature.  The images for Rounds 1 and 2 have be screened by two judges in each division.  The top images have been identified and the Round 1 images will be submitted to PSA by November 1.  We should have the results of the PSA judging by the middle of December.  Round 2 images will be submitted by February 15, and we will have those results for that round by mid-March.

Year-end Meeting / Holiday Party

From Suzanne Anaya:

Our Year-end Meeting and Holiday Party will be held on December 7, which is sneaking up on us rather quickly! We are again planning to make the party a potluck at St. Luke’s Church. Our Year-end Meeting will follow immediately after the party, and anyone unable to attend in person will be able to join us via Zoom.

Please contact Suzanne Anaya by December 1 at fuzfawn@aol.com to let her know if you are attending and what you will be able to bring. We need only one or two desserts, but we will need staples such as salads, potatoes (sweet or regular), vegetables, bread, and appetizers. The club will provide an entree (turkey or ham) and drinks. Suzanne will have coffee available.

More information will be coming in early December.

Judging and Critiquing Workshop

From Peggy McClure

The hardest task a photographer has is evaluating their own images.  The second hardest task is to evaluate someone else’s images.  The OPCC Executive Committee is pleased to announce that we have asked Dr. Christine Cook, the Competition Director for the Florida Council of Camera Clubs, to conduct a workshop on just this topic.

The workshop is available to all OPCC club members in good standing and is free to attend.  The workshop will be conducted in January 2024 on two consecutive Saturdays (January 13th and 20th).  The sessions will be conducted from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. via Zoom.  For those unable to attend, the workshop will be recorded and will be available for viewing on the website.

SPEAKER SERIES

Emilie Talpin – General Macro Photography - November 16, 2023, 7:00 PM

Join the club for the last speaker in our 2023 Speaker Series, Emilie Talpin. Emilie got into photography after joining a photo club in 2018. She was so fascinated by the art form that she dove in head first. Now, just a few years later, she is an Olympus Ambassador with a focus on macro photography, concentrating on wildlife and water drop refraction. Learning Emilie’s tips and tricks will be a great way to jump start our winter indoor photography or encourage us to get outside and be inspired by the small details of the season. Click HERE for more information. Click HERE to access the meeting via Zoom.

FIELD TRIPS, WORKSHOPS, & MEET-UPS

Sequim Holiday Tractor Parade and Tree Lighting Ceremony

Our next field trip will be to photograph the Holiday Tractor Parade and Tree Lighting Ceremony in downtown Sequim on November 25. The field trip will be led by Kevin Talbot. The Tree Lighting will take place at Centennial Place, at the corner of Sequim Avenue and Washington St. A good place to photograph the tractors before the parade is in the Sequim High School parking lot, the assembly point for the parade. For more details, click HERE. Details of the meeting time and place will be announced soon.

Florida “Field Trip”

Our next Florida “field trip” planning meeting is scheduled for November 18th at 9:00 AM via Zoom. Mark your calendars - all who are interested in joining our February 2024 outing to Florida are welcome.
